Individual and Group Counseling

I offer individual counseling and family and group counseling.

Many factors contribute to peoples distress and addiction. We search and work through the underlying causes of addiction and address other relational, and emotional issues.

Co-occurring mental health challenges almost always accompany addiction.  It’s not surprising that anxious and depressed people self-medicate with drugs and alcohol, which may develop into it’s own problem. And addiction and trauma bring on significant anxiety and depression as consequences pile up.

Many individuals also have horrible situations that cause depression, anxiety, grief, or shame, or worse, all of which require attention and care.

As part of their care, I embrace and make use of many approaches to achieve well being and recovery. Regarding addiction treatment, the most traditional is the 12 Step Model which is important to draw on and make available, but I also pull from other modalities (approaches) such as SMART recovery and motivational interviewing and DBT.  I’m also trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy and use the Pillars Program to assist in helping people when they are in a life transition.

I often try and assemble groups. The shared experience and validation one gets is powerful and often a relief. At the very least, if welcome, I make a huge effort to connect clients with others with whom they can relate to, and share their experience and journey.   No one knows another’s pain as well as one who has experienced it.

If one is embarking on recovery I know so many wonderful people in recovery and I try and match those who are starting out with those who can show them what a positive life of sobriety is like and teach that it is probably not what they think. What they veterans exemplify is that sobriety, over time is a fantastic, powerful rebirth and a chance for connections, and a life never experienced or imagined.
